The Accra High Court has retaken the plea of Daniel Asiedu, popularly known as “Sexy Dondon,” as legal proceedings in the retrial over the alleged murder of former Abuakwa North MP, J.B. Danquah-Adu, move into a new phase.
Asiedu, a trader, pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and robbery when the case was called on Thursday. He was subsequently remanded into lawful custody and is expected to return to court on July 8, 2026.
The case has been ordered for retrial following a split verdict delivered by a seven-member jury on December 4, 2024, which ended in a 4–3 decision and failed to reach a unanimous conclusion.
At Thursday’s hearing, a new trial judge formally retook the accused person’s plea, marking the procedural start of the retrial process. The court is expected to empanel a fresh jury after completing case management proceedings involving both the prosecution and the defence.
The prosecution maintains that the deceased, former MP J.B. Danquah-Adu, was killed at his Shiashie residence in Accra on February 9, 2016, during an alleged robbery incident.
According to the state, investigations suggest the accused gained entry into the residence after bypassing security and accessing the building through a ladder used to reach a window leading to the bedroom.
The prosecution further alleges that a struggle ensued after the MP woke up, resulting in fatal stab wounds, and that several mobile phones were taken from the scene.
It is also the state’s case that the accused was later linked to the stolen items and arrested after a repairer reportedly noticed suspicious marks and images on devices brought in for servicing.
As the retrial process begins, the court is expected to set timelines for the empanelment of a new jury before substantive hearings commence.
