Ada East Island Communities Plug into Ghana’s Renewable Energy Future

Three isolated island communities in Ghana’s Ada East District—Azizakpe, Alorkem, and Aflive—have been connected to electricity for the first time, marking a historic moment in the country’s renewable energy journey. The communities now benefit from mini-grid systems powered by renewable energy, thanks to funding from the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).

The newly commissioned systems are more than just technical installations; they represent a transformative shift in local livelihoods. For the more than 3,000 residents across the islands, access to electricity means a new era of opportunity—supporting education, healthcare, small businesses, and modern communication.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Ghana’s Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, emphasized that the project is a stepping stone in a much larger agenda. The government plans to electrify an additional 150 off-grid island and lake communities, extending access to over 250,000 people nationwide.

“This is only the beginning,” Jinapor declared. “Our target is ambitious—reaching a 99.8% electricity access rate. Through renewable mini-grid solutions, we are bringing light, equity, and development to even the most remote corners of Ghana.”

The Swiss Ambassador to Ghana, Simone Giger, praised the initiative while issuing a call to action for sustainability. She reminded stakeholders, particularly the Volta River Authority (VRA), of the importance of ongoing maintenance and community engagement to protect the infrastructure and its long-term impact.

“We have made a substantial investment,” Giger said. “The real success lies not only in today’s commissioning but in how well these systems are operated and maintained in the years ahead.”

VRA’s Acting Chief Executive, Ing. Edward Ekow Obeng-Kenzo, reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to sustainability and operational excellence. “We’re not just powering homes—we’re powering futures. VRA is fully dedicated to managing these assets responsibly to ensure their enduring value for the people of Azizakpe, Alorkem, and Aflive.”

This landmark electrification move aligns with Ghana’s broader “Light for Life” policy and reflects a growing global shift toward decentralised, clean energy solutions that prioritize community empowerment.
