Bajabulile Swazi Tshabalala, a Presidential Candidate for the African Development Bank, has made a compelling case for Africa to pivot away from foreign aid and focus on leveraging its own abundant resources for sustainable development. In a candid interview on Starr FM, Tshabalala argued that the continent’s future lies not in relying on external assistance but in tapping into its vast natural and human resources.
Tshabalala emphasized that Africa must move past the narrative of seeking more aid, noting that the continent will never achieve long-term prosperity through foreign donations. “We were never going to get rich from aid,” she stated, urging a shift in focus toward the wealth already available within the continent.
Highlighting the potential of Africa’s people, she praised the skilled, bright, and hardworking individuals across nations like Ghana, calling human capital the continent’s most valuable asset. She also pointed to Ghana’s rich natural resources, including gold and oil, as further evidence that Africa has the means to become self-sufficient and thrive economically without external dependency.
“We have the wherewithal to refocus our attention on developing ourselves,” Tshabalala said, calling for a united effort to reduce reliance on international aid and invest in the continent’s own potential.
