Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called on the government to credit former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia as the originator of the Gold-for-Reserve policy currently being implemented.
Responding to President John Dramani Mahama’s address in Parliament on Friday, Afenyo-Markin acknowledged that the policy had contributed to recent economic gains highlighted by the President. However, he argued that the administration had failed to properly recognise its intellectual roots.
“The president is telling us today that some gains have been made through this Gold-For-Reserve policy,” he noted, before questioning what he described as a deliberate omission in the policy’s attribution.
According to the Minority Leader, Dr. Bawumia was the “brainchild” behind the initiative and should be publicly acknowledged for his role in conceptualising it during the previous administration.
Urging bipartisan fairness, Afenyo-Markin appealed to the government to rise above political rivalry and give credit where it is due.
“I would want to urge the government to give to Bawumia what belongs to Bawumia,” he stated, reinforcing his appeal with a local proverb to underscore the importance of recognising merit across political divides.
