Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called on members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Akwatia to rally behind the party’s candidate in the upcoming by-election, describing victory as the best way to honour the late Member of Parliament, Ernest Yaw Kumi.
Speaking at the one-week observation of the late MP, Mr. Afenyo-Markin emphasized that Ernest Kumi endured significant political struggles during his short tenure in Parliament, and it would be a fitting tribute for the NPP to retain the seat in his memory.
“Let us not allow fear or intimidation to deter us. The greatest honour we can give Ernest is to continue his legacy by ensuring that his seat remains with the NPP,” he told mourners and party faithful gathered at Akyem Wenchi.
He urged supporters to intensify their campaign efforts in the days leading to the polls, encouraging them to remain resilient and united despite the heated political environment.
“Monday night, we will not sleep—we will campaign till dawn. Stand firm, do not be intimidated. Together, we will win this election for Ernest,” he declared.
The Akwatia by-election, set for Tuesday, September 2, has gained national attention following the passing of Ernest Kumi. The contest will see the NPP’s Solomon Kwame Asumadu face off against the NDC’s Bernard Bediako in what is expected to be a fiercely contested race.
