The Paramount Chief of the Aflao Traditional Area, Togbui Adzonugaga Amenya Fiti V, has raised concerns over the future of the proposed “Big Push” road project from Tokor Junction to Aflao, urging government to ensure its full implementation to safeguard the municipality from growing environmental threats.
In a press statement, the traditional ruler described the project as more than a transportation initiative, stressing that it serves a vital role in protecting communities along the coastline from erosion and potential sea incursions.
According to Togbui Fiti, the project is critical to the long-term safety and development of Aflao and surrounding communities, making it imperative for authorities to execute it according to its original design and scope.
He called on the Minister for Roads and Highways to undertake an urgent visit to the Ketu South Municipality to assess the project firsthand and ensure that implementation plans remain on track.
The Paramount Chief warned that any attempt to alter, delay or scale down the project could expose residents to significant environmental and economic risks, particularly as coastal erosion continues to threaten parts of the municipality.
Drawing lessons from recent flooding incidents in Accra, Togbui Fiti stressed the importance of proactive infrastructure investments aimed at protecting vulnerable communities from natural disasters and the effects of climate change.
He noted that strategic projects intended to enhance public safety and resilience should be prioritised and insulated from political considerations.
The traditional leader further emphasized that national development initiatives must be guided by fairness, transparency and the broader public interest rather than partisan interests.
Togbui Fiti reaffirmed the determination of the people of Aflao to continue advocating for projects that directly impact their welfare and improve the resilience of their communities.
He also called for strict adherence to approved development plans, insisting that infrastructure projects of such importance must be executed without compromise to achieve their intended objectives.
The appeal highlights growing concerns among residents and traditional authorities about the need for sustained investment in coastal protection infrastructure as communities along Ghana’s coastline face increasing environmental pressures.
