Kennedy Nyarko Osei, Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru, has called for live television coverage of the upcoming hearings of the committee investigating petitions against the suspended Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo.
In a strongly worded Facebook post on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, the MP stressed the need for transparency, arguing that the Ghanaian public would not accept a secretive process.
“For the purpose of transparency and also to carry the Ghanaian people along, we demand that the committee’s hearings must be televised live. Ghanaians will not accept any hearings that will be done in secrecy,” Osei wrote.
The five-member committee, chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, was established by President John Dramani Mahama following three petitions filed against the Chief Justice. The committee’s formation follows Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution, which requires the President to set up a committee of inquiry when a prima facie case is established against a justice.
Presidential Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, announced earlier that the committee would begin its work on Thursday, May 15, 2025, and is expected to sit three times a week, submitting its findings and recommendations to the President upon completion.
The case has attracted significant public attention, with legal experts and civil society groups calling for an open and transparent process, given the potential implications for Ghana’s judicial independence and integrity.
The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has also weighed in, describing the inquiry as an attack on the judiciary and warning against any attempts to undermine the country’s judicial system.
As the committee prepares to commence its hearings, all eyes are on the government to ensure a fair, transparent, and accountable process that upholds public confidence in Ghana’s judicial institutions.
