Senior Lecturer and political analyst Joshua Jebuntie Zaato has called on the Ministry of Transport to implement a targeted deployment plan for the 100 newly acquired 29-seater buses, emphasizing the need to distinguish between intracity and intercity services.
Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Tuesday, Dr. Zaato highlighted concerns over whether the new fleet is intended for short urban commutes or long-haul intercity travel, stressing that strategic allocation is essential to maximize efficiency and reduce overlap with existing services.
He proposed that the State Transport Corporation focus on intercity operations using larger, more durable buses capable of handling long-distance routes, while Metro Mass Transit (MMT) buses should concentrate on city travel, effectively complementing and competing with commercial “trotro” services.
“Bigger buses should serve long-haul routes under STC, while Metro Mass Transit buses remain within urban areas to improve mobility and provide commuters with efficient alternatives,” he stated.
The call comes after Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, confirmed the arrival of the new buses, part of ongoing government initiatives to ease transport challenges and modernize public transportation infrastructure.
Analysts say a clear operational strategy could enhance service delivery, reduce congestion in cities, and improve the overall competitiveness of Ghana’s public transport sector.
