Ghana’s Chief of Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, has reinforced the military’s frontline presence and commitment to national security during a strategic tour of the Northern Region — his latest stop in a nationwide familiarisation mission since assuming command.
The visit, which took him to the Northern Command Headquarters in Tamale and further to key military bases such as the 6th Infantry Battalion and the Army Special Operations Training School (ASOTS) in Daboya, served as both a morale booster and an operational audit of deployed troops.
Major General Gbetanu used the tour to personally assess logistics, administration, and combat readiness, while also engaging with soldiers in field operations. He emphasized that such direct engagement helps shape a clearer understanding of challenges on the ground and encourages unity in mission.
“This is more than just a familiarisation tour,” he said. “It is a reaffirmation of leadership presence and a symbol of solidarity with those who defend our sovereignty daily.”
Underscoring the military’s multi-pronged role in safeguarding Ghana, he noted the preparedness of the Ghana Armed Forces to handle both external aggression and internal security threats, particularly amidst rising concerns of extremism in the Sahel region.
In a bid to further cement military and civilian cooperation, Major General Gbetanu paid a courtesy call on the Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Naa Abukari II, highlighting the army’s respect for traditional authority and its intention to work closely with local leaders to maintain peace and stability.
His tour is part of a broader agenda to modernize army operations, enhance morale, and ensure responsive defense structures are maintained throughout the country.
