In a decisive operation against illegal mining, the Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested 15 individuals at Watreso and Preacher Krom, near Manso Adubia in the Amansie South District. The operation, described by police as intelligence-led and highly targeted, forms part of ongoing efforts to curb the surge in galamsey activities plaguing the region.
The suspects, ranging in age from 21 to 45, were reportedly caught in the act and are now assisting police with investigations. The arrested individuals include both men and women, suggesting the growing scale and reach of illegal mining networks.
Authorities recovered a cache of equipment and weapons believed to have been used in the mining operations. Items seized include two pump-action guns, two Musler 12 firearms, over 60 cartridges, power generators, a water pumping machine, and excavator control boards, among others.
The police have since secured the seized items as evidence while vowing to intensify surveillance and enforcement in illegal mining hotspots.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command reaffirmed its determination to dismantle illegal mining operations and protect natural resources from further degradation.
