In a major shift aimed at giving students more control over their educational paths, the Ministry of Education has announced that Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates will now select their preferred Senior High Schools only after their results are released.
The policy, revealed by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, seeks to address longstanding challenges in the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS). Previously, students were required to pick schools before knowing their BECE results, leading to frequent mismatches and inefficiencies in placements.
Under the new system, candidates will have a mandatory one-week window after results are announced to finalize their choices based on their actual academic performance. This adjustment is intended to allow students to make informed decisions, reduce placement errors, and streamline the overall admission process.
Minister Iddrisu emphasized that the reform is part of broader efforts to make school placements fairer and more transparent, saying: “In the past, students selected schools without knowing their aggregate, and that affected the placement system. This time, we are providing a dedicated period for students to confirm their choices based on their performance.”
The move has been widely welcomed by educators and parents, who hope it will reduce the stress and uncertainty that previously accompanied senior high school placements.
