Authorities have ordered all final-year students of the Bolgatanga Technical Institute (BOTECH) to vacate the campus following a renewed outbreak of student violence that has raised fresh concerns about discipline and safety at the school.
The decision means final-year students preparing for the Certificate II Examination will now report from their respective homes to sit for their exams, instead of remaining on campus.
The directive was issued by the Upper East Regional Minister and Chairman of the Regional Security Council, Mr Akamugri Donatus Atanga, as part of immediate measures to restore order.
The unrest reportedly broke out on May 5, 2026, around 10:00 p.m., when a final-year student allegedly punished a first-year student for reasons that remain unclear.
The situation quickly escalated into a broader confrontation involving groups of students, with violence spreading across the campus.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that students used stones, cutlasses, and other makeshift weapons during the clashes, resulting in significant destruction of school property, including polytanks, CCTV systems, tables, and chairs.
The Ghana Police Service confirmed the arrest of five students in connection with the incident, while efforts continue to restore calm.
School authorities say the police were eventually able to bring the situation under control and have since begun assisting in the evacuation of final-year students from the campus.
Principal of the school, Mr Yorose Zachary, confirmed that management is working with security agencies to ensure the orderly removal of students and prevent further disturbances.
The latest violence comes just months after students signed behavioural bonds committing to peaceful conduct, following earlier disturbances that led to the temporary closure of the school in August 2025.
Security officials say investigations are ongoing as authorities seek to prevent further breakdowns in discipline and ensure a safe environment for academic activities.
