Former Jubilee House staffer Samuel Bryan Buabeng says the GH¢10 million defamation suit filed by Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) Managing Director Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare will not stop him from raising questions about her continued tenure at the state-owned company.
Ms Opare has sued Mr Buabeng at the Accra High Court over social media publications which her lawyers say falsely linked her to alleged narcotics trafficking, corruption and abuse of office. She is seeking GH¢10 million in general damages, in addition to aggravated and exemplary damages.
The legal action centres on a September 22, 2026, Facebook publication in which Mr Buabeng’s post featured Ms Opare’s name and photograph alongside that of Frank Danquah, a GACL employee.
According to Ms Opare’s lawyers, the publication referred to Mr Danquah as her “favourite member of staff” and as an AVSEC supervisor who allegedly aided a drug trafficker. They argue that the post created an impression that Ms Opare was connected to or benefited from alleged narcotics-related criminal activity.
Ms Opare has denied the allegations. Her lawyers say Mr Danquah has worked with GACL since September 1, 2004, but has no personal relationship with her beyond their respective professional roles. They also say she rejects the description of him as her “favourite member of staff” and denies participating in or benefiting from any alleged criminal activity.
The plaintiff is also seeking orders compelling Mr Buabeng to remove the publication and related material, issue an unconditional retraction and apology, and refrain from republishing the statements or similar allegations.
Mr Buabeng, however, has responded by insisting that the legal action will not silence his questions about Ms Opare’s position at GACL.
In a social media post, he said he would continue to question why workers perceived to have links to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), including cleaners, messengers, watchmen and labourers, were allegedly removed from state institutions after January 7, 2025, while Ms Opare remained Managing Director of GACL.
“Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, you can’t gag anyone,” Mr Buabeng wrote.
He also questioned whether Ms Opare’s position and continued tenure warranted public scrutiny, asking what she had done for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and what she was allegedly doing for the party.
The comments form part of a broader political dispute surrounding appointments and staff changes at state institutions following the change of government in January 2025.
The defamation case itself concerns specific publications that Ms Opare says are false and damaging to her reputation, and the allegations remain before the High Court for determination.
