Cape Verde’s remarkable debut World Cup campaign gathered further momentum after they battled to an entertaining draw against two-time champions Uruguay in Miami, extending their unbeaten run in Group H.
Coming off a surprise 0-0 result against Spain in their opening match, Cape Verde once again proved their resilience and attacking ambition in a match that swung dramatically from end to end.
Dream start and rapid turnaround
The African side took the lead in the 21st minute when Kevin Pina fired home a powerful free-kick that squeezed through the Uruguay defensive wall, sparking celebrations among their supporters.
However, the lead shifted the rhythm of the game, with Cape Verde pushing forward in numbers and leaving space behind. Uruguay capitalised quickly, as Maxi Araujo headed in the equaliser after a deflection inside the box, before Agustín Canobbio put the South Americans ahead just before half-time.
Cape Verde fight back
Despite struggling at times under Uruguay’s high press, Cape Verde refused to retreat and continued to look dangerous on the counterattack.
Their persistence paid off when a defensive lapse from Mathías Olivera allowed Hélder Varela to intercept a loose pass, round the goalkeeper, and calmly slot into an empty net to restore parity.
Both sides pushed for a winner in a tense final phase, with Uruguay having a goal ruled out for offside after Federico Valverde bundled the ball over the line.
Open group heading into final matchday
The draw leaves Uruguay and Cape Verde level on two points each after two group matches, with qualification for the knockout stage still wide open.
Cape Verde now turn their attention to their final group fixture against Saudi Arabia, where a positive result could secure a historic progression to the last 32.
Uruguay, meanwhile, face a decisive clash against Spain, needing a strong performance to keep their tournament hopes alive.
Growing respect for Cape Verde
Beyond the result, Cape Verde’s performances have begun to attract attention, with the debutants showing a blend of discipline, counterattacking threat and confidence against higher-ranked opposition.
Their ability to respond under pressure and still chase a winning goal late in the game has reinforced their status as one of the tournament’s emerging surprises.
