The Cleveland Cavaliers rediscovered their winning form on Friday night, cutting their Eastern Conference semifinal series deficit to 2-1 with a commanding 126-104 victory over the Indiana Pacers.
The return of NBA Defensive Player of the Year Evan Mobley and All-Star guard Darius Garland, along with a strong bench performance from De’Andre Hunter, proved pivotal as the Cavs bounced back after dropping the first two games at home.
Mobley’s Presence Transforms Cavs’ Defense
Mobley’s impact was immediate and far-reaching, anchoring Cleveland’s defense while providing a crucial rebounding boost. The versatile big man filled the stat sheet with 18 points, 13 rebounds, four assists, three steals, and three blocks, demonstrating why he’s considered one of the league’s top defensive players.
“I knew if I was going to come out here and play, I had to be able to do certain things,” Mobley said after the game. “I felt pretty comfortable, especially yesterday and then shootaround today, so I was pretty confident I could come out here and play my game.”
His dominance on the boards helped the Cavs maintain a significant rebounding edge, setting the tone for a physical, high-energy performance that stifled the Pacers’ offense.
Garland Pushes Through Pain
Garland, playing through significant discomfort, also made a crucial contribution. Despite not being at full strength, the dynamic guard provided key scoring bursts, helping Cleveland pull away in the second half.
“He’s just playing through a lot of pain to get him to play this game,” head coach Kenny Atkinson said. “But taking the 0-2 situation, I think he had to push through a lot tonight. So hopefully he recovers quickly.”
Hunter Provides the Spark Off the Bench
Meanwhile, Hunter’s return to the rotation gave the Cavaliers a much-needed lift off the bench, adding defensive intensity and timely scoring to keep Indiana at bay. His energy and hustle were critical in preventing the Pacers from mounting a comeback.
Looking Ahead to Game 4
With momentum now shifting in Cleveland’s favor, the focus turns to recovery. The health of Mobley, Garland, and Hunter will be a critical factor as the Cavs aim to even the series in Game 4 on Sunday in Indianapolis.
As the Cavaliers regain their full strength, the Pacers may find it increasingly difficult to contain a Cleveland squad hitting its stride at the perfect time.
