The Volta Regional House of Chiefs has reaffirmed the supremacy of the judiciary, urging state institutions to respect court decisions amid an ongoing dispute involving the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
In a strongly worded statement signed by its President, Togbe Tepre Hodo IV, the House expressed concern over EOCO’s handling of matters relating to Gabriel Tanko Kwamigah-Atokple.
The Chiefs pointed to a High Court ruling which found that EOCO had acted outside its lawful mandate and breached constitutional principles of fairness. Describing the judgment as “clear and unequivocal,” they stressed that adherence to such rulings is essential to maintaining Ghana’s democratic order.
According to the statement, continued actions by EOCO following the court’s decision—reportedly including ongoing investigations and public commentary on the ruling—raise serious concerns about respect for judicial authority.
The House maintained that any dissatisfaction with a court ruling must be addressed through legal channels, particularly the appeals process, rather than actions that could be perceived as undermining the judiciary.
Emphasising that no institution is above the law, the Chiefs warned that disregard for court decisions could weaken public trust in the justice system and threaten the principles of constitutional governance.
They therefore called on EOCO to exercise restraint and fully comply with the rule of law, reiterating their commitment to protecting due process and the integrity of Ghana’s democratic institutions.
