Ghana’s law enforcement landscape has witnessed a major transition as President John Dramani Mahama officially swore in COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP). The ceremony, held at the Jubilee House on Friday, March 14, followed the removal of Dr. George Akuffo Dampare from office the previous day.
The decision to appoint Yohuno marks a significant shift in the leadership of the Ghana Police Service, signaling the government’s intent to restructure and refocus the service’s operations. While no official reason was given for Dampare’s dismissal, sources indicate it is part of broader efforts to realign the country’s security priorities.
COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno steps into the role with an extensive career spanning over four decades in law enforcement. His journey through the ranks of the Ghana Police Service has been marked by strategic leadership, operational expertise, and an emphasis on intelligence-led policing.
As a former Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIGP), Yohuno played a key role in strengthening coordination between police leadership and operational units, ensuring efficiency and enhanced public safety. He has held multiple high-ranking positions, including Director-General of Administration, Special Duties, Motor Traffic and Transport, Police Intelligence, Special Operations, and General Operations.
His contributions to national security include overseeing key police operations in the Greater Accra Region as Regional Commander, leading intelligence efforts to solve high-profile cases, and spearheading security strategies for major national events, including elections and international summits.
As he assumes his new role, Yohuno is expected to focus on improving police-community relations, enhancing intelligence-driven policing, and tackling corruption within the service. His leadership will be instrumental in shaping the future of Ghana’s law enforcement and reinforcing public trust in the police.
With a strong background in law enforcement, intelligence, and strategic operations, his tenure as IGP is anticipated to bring a renewed focus on professionalism, crime prevention, and national security enhancement.
