The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) constituency executive elections in Atwima Mponua in the Ashanti Region have been suspended indefinitely following a court injunction restraining the party from proceeding with the exercise.
The elections, which were scheduled to take place on Sunday, July 12, 2026, at the Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School old site, were halted after officials from the Electoral Commission (EC) arrived at the venue with a copy of the court order.
The development came after aspirants, delegates and party supporters had already gathered at the venue in readiness for the polls.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Nyinahin, the NPP’s Atwima Mponua Constituency Research and Elections Director, Mr Justice Nkrumah Boateng, confirmed that the injunction was issued by the High Court in Kumasi on July 9, 2026.
He explained that the elections committee would comply with the court’s directive and allow the legal process to run its course before announcing a new date for the elections.
According to him, the court had directed that the party should wait for 10 days pending the determination of the matter.
Mr Boateng said the legal action was initiated by five delegates from Mpasatia Atenansu, Ahenbronum and Bedabour electoral areas, who alleged that they were prevented from participating in the polling station elections held on May 12 and 17, 2026.
He further stated that the court had ordered the party to allow Baffour Awuah, Bright Oduro, Kingsley Ofori, Ama Agyeiwaa, Adamu Muntaro and others who claimed they were denied the opportunity to contest in the earlier polling station elections to be considered.
Mr Boateng stressed that the party would respect the court order, describing adherence to legal directives as essential to ensuring a credible and peaceful electoral process.
“We need to be law-abiding throughout this process, especially when there is a High Court order. That remains the strongest directive guiding the management of the party’s affairs,” he said.
He assured delegates and other stakeholders that a new date would be communicated once the legal issues were resolved.
Mr Boateng also appealed for calm and restraint among party members, urging all sides to support an amicable resolution of the matter to ensure a smooth continuation of the constituency elections.
