In a clear break from past election security measures, Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah has confirmed that only the Ghana Police Service will oversee security for today’s Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun—no military forces will be deployed.
Addressing public unease on his Facebook page, Dr. Boamah doubled down on the decision, citing the Police’s expertise in managing electoral events and emphasizing lessons learned from previous polls marred by violence.
“By entrusting security to the Police alone, we aim to foster a calm environment free from intimidation,” he wrote. The Minister highlighted the need to avoid repetitions of incidents like the Ayawaso West Wuogon clashes and the 2020 election fatalities.
Dr. Boamah urged residents to participate peacefully, expressing confidence that a demilitarized approach would reinforce Ghana’s democratic integrity and ensure voter safety.
