Defense Minister Dr. Omane Boamah has revealed that the previous administration left a GH₵270 million debt owed to food suppliers for the Ghana Armed Forces, raising concerns about the neglect of the military’s welfare.
In a social media post, Dr. Boamah criticized the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government for failing to prioritize food provision for soldiers, stating that the accumulated debt spans from August 2023 to December 2024.
The Defense Minister assured that the current government is committed to addressing the issue, emphasizing that “soldiers cannot march on an empty stomach.” He disclosed that Finance Minister Dr. Ato Forson has pledged to ensure current food supply bills are paid while working to clear the outstanding debt inherited from the previous administration.
To prevent future food shortages, Dr. Boamah announced that the government will implement short- and medium-term solutions, with concrete steps expected to begin next week.
The revelation has sparked discussions about the financial management of the military under the former administration and the urgent need for sustainable funding for the armed forces’ essential needs.
