The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has urged customers, landlords and facility managers to grant authorised personnel access to their premises ahead of a nationwide meter audit aimed at tackling electricity theft and improving revenue collection.
The company said the exercise would cover all its operational areas, with officials inspecting prepaid and postpaid meters, Special Load Tariff (SLT) installations and associated wiring to verify the integrity of electricity metering systems.
In a statement, ECG cautioned customers against denying or delaying access to its personnel on the grounds that they had not received individual notification letters, explaining that its public announcement served as official notice of the exercise.
The company said it would not issue additional individual notices or appointment letters before the inspections.
However, ECG urged customers to take precautions by verifying the identities of personnel before allowing them onto their properties.
It said all employees and authorised agents assigned to the exercise would carry official identification cards, which customers could authenticate through the ECG Customer Call Centre on 0302 611 611 or the *226# USSD service.
Under the USSD verification procedure, customers must dial *226#, select Option 5 for staff verification and enter the six-digit code provided by the personnel concerned.
The system will display the staff member’s full name, region and district to help customers confirm their identity.
ECG said the audit was intended to ensure that electricity consumption was accurately measured and billed, while reducing commercial losses and addressing illegal connections and other forms of electricity theft.
The company also referred customers to Regulation 4(h) of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (Customer Service) Regulations, 2020 (L.I. 2413), which requires consumers to provide utility employees or authorised agents with safe and reasonable access to their premises, subject to verifiable identification and compliance with the utility’s customer charter.
ECG encouraged customers seeking further information to contact its call centre or reach out through its official social media platforms under the handle @ECGghOfficial.
