The Ministry of Education has stepped up efforts to resolve outstanding Senior High School placement challenges ahead of the reopening of schools, with Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu assuring affected students and parents that their concerns will be addressed.
Mr Iddrisu gave the assurance when he visited the National Resolution Centre in Accra on Wednesday to assess difficulties arising from the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS).
The visit provided the Minister with first-hand information on the challenges being reported by parents and students as the Ministry works to complete the current placement exercise.
Mr Iddrisu said the government remained committed to ensuring that no student was left behind, directing that concerns brought before the Centre be treated with urgency.
He also commended officials of the Centre for their work, noting that a significant number of cases had already been resolved since its activation.
The Minister said efforts were continuing to address the remaining cases before the commencement of the new academic year.
The latest intervention comes as the Ministry prepares to undertake a comprehensive review of the CSSPS following calls by the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference for greater transparency and accountability in the placement process.
The Ministry announced on Tuesday that a Technical Working Committee would be established after the conclusion of the current placement exercise to examine the various components of the system and identify areas requiring improvement.
It said the review was intended to ensure that the placement system remained credible, efficient, fair and responsive to the needs of students, parents and schools.
The Ministry maintained that the CSSPS was fundamentally merit-based, with merit taking precedence over protocol in the placement of qualified candidates.
The planned review is expected to provide an opportunity for the Ministry to assess the current system and address concerns surrounding the placement process beyond the immediate challenges confronting students and parents.
