Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, Member of Parliament for Effiduase/Asokore, has broken ranks with elements of his party by criticizing the decision to include former New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirants in Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s ongoing ‘Thank You Tour.’
Speaking in an interview on Wontumi TV, the outspoken MP described the move as “unnecessary” and cautioned that it could undermine the clarity and unity of the party’s post-election message.
“I totally disagree,” Dr. Afriyie said bluntly. “It was Bawumia who led us into an election, so he must be the one thanking the people. There was no need to involve the other aspirants.”
Although he maintains a personal friendship with fellow aspirant Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Afriyie stressed that political support is a different matter.
“I am good friends with Ken, but he knows I don’t support him politically,” he said. “We have mutual respect, but my loyalty is with the vice president.”
His comments reflect a growing unease among some party members over efforts to project unity through collective appearances, especially when internal competition still lingers beneath the surface.
Dr. Afriyie insisted that Bawumia’s leadership and candidacy should be front and center in the party’s engagement with the grassroots, arguing that blending other aspirants into the tour dilutes the message and could confuse the electorate.
