The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has revealed a significant breakthrough in the ongoing investigation into missing containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), tracing a total of 2,637 containers, more than twice the number previously reported missing.
This revelation has intensified public scrutiny and raised questions about the management and oversight of ECG’s equipment inventory. Initial reports in March 2025 cited only about 1,300 missing containers, with a mere 40 recovered at that time.
Richmond Rockson, Head of Communications at the Ministry, explained on the Citi Breakfast Show on May 27, 2025, that the discrepancies arose from conflicting records handed over during the transition between Energy Ministers.
While the team initially identified 3,000 uncleared containers at the port, the new Minister was informed that roughly 2,500 remained unaccounted for.
To resolve the confusion, an official investigation was launched, revealing that 2,637 containers were involved in the saga, with 2,583 confirmed in the custody of port authorities.
Rockson emphasized that the probe has been vital in clarifying the true scale of the issue and closing gaps in the inventory records. He further indicated that ongoing efforts could lead to the recovery of even more containers.
The discovery has sparked calls for increased transparency and stronger controls within ECG to prevent future mismanagement of critical assets.
