Thirteen years after the death of former Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama, his son, Farouk Aliu Mahama, says the late statesman’s influence remains deeply woven into the country’s social and political fabric.
In a reflective post shared on Facebook, Farouk—who is also a Member of Parliament—said the nation continues to benefit from the values and public spirit his father embodied throughout his life. He noted that Aliu Mahama’s principles of humility, discipline, and service are still shaping communities and inspiring leaders long after his passing in 2012.
Farouk recalled the shock that gripped the country on November 16, 2012, describing the day of his father’s death as one that left both the family and the nation “drowned in tears.” But he stressed that the former Vice President’s contributions have ensured that his legacy remains alive.
According to him, Aliu Mahama’s approach to leadership—marked by calm resolve, intellectual depth, and unwavering patriotism—set a standard that succeeding vice presidents have often drawn from, even in moments where they held differing views from their principals.
He highlighted the Aliu Mahama Foundation as one of the strongest reminders of his father’s life of service, noting that it continues to deliver social interventions and support vulnerable communities across the country.
Farouk further celebrated his father’s journey from modest beginnings to becoming a respected engineer, contractor, and ultimately one of Ghana’s most influential political figures. He said this story continues to inspire young people striving to rise above their circumstances.
“As a family, we miss a towering figure,” he wrote, adding a prayer for Allah to grant the former Vice President eternal peace.
