Former Jaman South Member of Parliament and Deputy Minister of Aviation, Yaw Mahama Afful, has entered the race for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Bono Regional Chairmanship.
Mr Afful picked his nomination forms on Wednesday at the party’s regional office in Sunyani as nominations opened for the 2026 regional executive elections.
He was accompanied by supporters and former constituency executives from the region.
Confirming his decision to contest, the former MP said he was seeking the chairmanship position to contribute to the reorganisation and rebuilding of the party in the Bono Region.
Mr Afful served as the MP for Jaman South for 12 years and was also a former Chairman of the NPP Parliamentary Caucus in the Bono Region.
His supporters believe his political and parliamentary experience makes him well-positioned to lead the party’s recovery efforts following the NPP’s poor performance in the 2024 general elections.
The party lost all 11 parliamentary seats in the Bono Region during the 2024 elections, a development that supporters of Mr Afful say requires experienced leadership to reverse ahead of the 2028 polls.
Hayford Atta Takyi, a member of the NPP Communication Team in the Jaman South Constituency, described the party’s performance as disappointing, particularly because the region had traditionally been considered one of its strongholds.
He attributed the retention of the Jaman South seat in the 2024 elections partly to Mr Afful’s political experience.
A former Jaman South Constituency Secretary of the NPP, Samuel Obeng Takyi, also called for the party to draw on the former MP’s experience as it seeks to rebuild its structures in the region.
He said Mr Afful’s experience in Parliament and leadership of the Bono Parliamentary Caucus could be valuable to the party’s reorganisation ahead of the 2028 elections.
Meanwhile, the Bono Regional Communication Director of the NPP, Gabriel Korang Ababio, disclosed that 14 aspirants had so far picked nomination forms to contest the 11 regional executive positions.
The regional elections are expected to form part of the NPP’s broader reorganisation efforts as the party prepares for the 2028 general elections.
