Commercial drivers and motorbike operators on the Nyankrom Junction–Nyankrom town road in the Western Region have taken matters into their own hands by embarking on a communal exercise to address persistent flooding and road deterioration along the stretch.
The exercise, carried out on Wednesday, June 24, temporarily disrupted traffic and led to the blockage of the road as participants worked to clear choked gutters believed to be contributing to the road’s worsening condition.
The action affected the movement of vehicles, including haulage trucks transporting goods to and from the Marcopolo and Twyford Keda manufacturing plants, resulting in significant traffic congestion in the area.
According to the drivers, years of poor drainage maintenance have left sections of the road riddled with deep potholes and prone to flooding whenever it rains, making travel increasingly difficult for motorists.
One of the drivers explained that the communal effort was aimed at restoring the free flow of water through blocked drainage channels to prevent further damage to the road.
He noted that floodwaters frequently overflow onto the roadway because gutters are clogged with debris, worsening conditions for road users, particularly operators of smaller vehicles.
The drivers maintained that their action should not be viewed as a demonstration but as a practical response to a long-standing problem affecting their daily livelihoods.
They argued that while heavy-duty trucks are often able to navigate the damaged sections, taxi drivers and motorbike riders face greater challenges using the road safely.
The group expressed hope that their intervention would draw attention to the urgent need for permanent drainage and road rehabilitation works to improve accessibility and transportation in the area.
