The Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) has called on the Ghana Police Service to investigate and prosecute boxer Michael Nii Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, over alleged threats against the Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
The committee said the alleged threats, reportedly made on social media, were unacceptable and required the attention of law enforcement authorities.
In a statement signed by GBIMC Chairman Samir Captan, the committee described threats against a public official as a criminal matter and urged the police to take immediate action.
The GBIMC also accused Ayitey Powers of repeatedly engaging in abusive conduct online, including alleged insults directed at Mr Captan and the committee’s Vice Chairman, former world boxing champion Professor Azumah Nelson.
According to the committee, it has formally petitioned the police to investigate the boxer and, where appropriate, initiate criminal proceedings.
The development comes as the GBIMC pursues efforts to introduce greater discipline and accountability within Ghana’s boxing fraternity.
The committee further disclosed that it had begun disciplinary proceedings against Ayitey Powers in accordance with its mandate to regulate and restructure the sport.
The GBIMC warned that intimidation and threats should not be allowed to undermine efforts to reform Ghanaian boxing.
“Ghana boxing should not be held hostage by any intimidation, thuggery or impunity,” the statement said.
The committee subsequently appealed to boxing stakeholders, athletes and supporters to support efforts to restore discipline, professionalism and respect within the sport.
