The Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) has officially approved the termination of Prof Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa’s tenure as Vice Chancellor, following a decision by the university’s Governing Council.
According to a communiqué signed by the University Registrar, Emmanuel Baidoo, Prof Ohene Afoakwa, who had been seconded to serve as Vice Chancellor, was notified last month that his secondment would end on February 28, 2026, coinciding with his voluntary retirement.
A letter dated February 26, 2026, from the Chairman of the Governing Council, Ing Divine Kpetigo, directed that all engagements with Prof Ohene Afoakwa cease from the end of February. “With effect from 28th February 2026, Prof Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa is no longer authorised to act in the capacity of Vice Chancellor,” the letter stated.
On March 3, 2026, an emergency meeting of the Governing Council formally approved his dismissal and confirmed the appointment of Prof Ebenezer Malcalm as the new Vice Chancellor.
The circular further indicated that the decision received the backing of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), the statutory authority overseeing all tertiary institutions in Ghana.
The move marks a transition in leadership at GCTU as the institution seeks continuity under Prof Malcalm’s stewardship.
