The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ghana has acted quickly to repatriate a Ghanaian national, Emmanuel Asamoah, following a widely circulated video showing him being harassed in South Africa.
The footage, which drew strong reactions across social media, showed a group confronting Asamoah and other foreign nationals, accusing them of taking jobs meant for locals. The incident has reignited debate over recurring xenophobic tensions in parts of South Africa, often linked to economic hardship and unemployment.
While confirming the evacuation, Harold Agyeman, Coordinating Director for Political and Economic Affairs, emphasised that the government prioritised the safety of its citizens, especially in situations where hostility escalates.
According to him, the decision to bring Asamoah back to Ghana was taken to ensure his immediate safety, even as authorities continue to engage their South African counterparts over the matter.
The development has also drawn attention to the broader issue of the treatment of African migrants within the continent, with calls for stronger protections and cooperation among governments.
Officials say they remain confident in assurances from South African authorities to address such incidents, but stress that Ghana will not hesitate to intervene whenever the safety of its nationals abroad is at risk.
