The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has reported a significant reduction in prank calls to its emergency lines, a positive development in its ongoing effort to improve response times and save lives.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s “Breakfast Daily” on Friday, May 9, ADO 1 Derrick Elorm Adzokpa of the GNFS Public Relations Department announced that prank calls to the service had dropped by 31.52% in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024.
“This is a promising sign,” Adzokpa said, attributing the decline to intensified public education campaigns and a growing understanding among Ghanaians about the dangers of misusing emergency numbers.
However, he stressed that prank calls remain a serious issue, as they continue to clog vital communication lines, potentially delaying the response to genuine emergencies.
“Imagine someone in a life-threatening situation being unable to reach us because another person is making a prank call,” he said, underscoring the human cost of such misuse.
Adzokpa also highlighted the availability of alternative contact numbers for those unable to reach the main 112 or 192 lines during peak periods, providing the additional hotlines: 0302772446 and 0299340383.
“Every second counts in an emergency, and having these alternative lines available can make a critical difference,” he added.
The GNFS remains committed to promoting responsible use of emergency services, with a clear message to the public: misuse can cost lives, and every call matters.
