Ghana is set to take center stage in West African diplomacy as it prepares to host the official launch of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) 50th anniversary celebrations on April 22, 2025.
The high-profile event, to be held at the Accra International Conference Centre, will not only mark a major milestone in regional cooperation but also affirm Ghana’s role as a key architect of West Africa’s integration agenda.
President John Dramani Mahama is expected to lead the opening ceremony, ushering in a year-long series of events commemorating five decades of ECOWAS’s existence and evolution.
At a press briefing ahead of the launch, Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, emphasized that Ghana’s selection as host reflects deep respect for its historic and ongoing contributions to the bloc’s growth and cohesion.
“It’s a recognition of our unflinching commitment to regional unity and leadership in the ECOWAS project,” Ablakwa stated.
The launch will feature the unveiling of the ECOWAS 50th anniversary logo and the declaration of a commemorative theme that will guide celebratory and reflective activities throughout the year.
Ghana’s role in the Jubilee goes beyond the ceremonial. The country will also host an extraordinary ECOWAS Council of Ministers meeting from April 22 to 23, 2025. The gathering is expected to draw foreign ministers and senior officials from across the sub-region to chart a path forward for the bloc, particularly amid rising security concerns, economic disparities, and calls for institutional reform.
The 50th anniversary comes at a time when ECOWAS faces both significant achievements—including visa-free travel, conflict mediation, and trade facilitation—and stark challenges, such as political instability and questions over its relevance in a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape.
Ghana’s hosting of these landmark events positions the country not only as a venue but also as a key thought leader in shaping ECOWAS’s next chapter.
