Ghanaians have raised serious alarm former President John Dramani Mahama’s alleged dealings with military leaders in the Sahel region, particularly concerning Ghana’s gold reserves.
These concerns and debate begun soon after media personality Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah has sparked that national conversation following his claims about former President John Dramani Mahama’s alleged dealings with military leaders in the Sahel region.
According to him, the dealings do not seem right, particularly concerning Ghana’s gold reserves.
In a fiery broadcast on April 1, 2025, Afrifa-Mensah voiced concerns about Mahama’s growing ties with coup leaders from Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, suggesting that these relationships may be linked to Ghana’s gold. According to Afrifa-Mensah, Mahama’s involvement with these leaders, allegedly influenced by Russia, could be part of a broader scheme to channel Ghana’s gold to other countries.
“John Mahama’s increasing engagement with the Sahel region is no coincidence,” Afrifa-Mensah said during his For the Records show. “A whistleblower has hinted that he is involved in deals related to our gold, possibly in exchange for fulfilling commitments to Russia. It’s troubling to see a former president, now in diplomatic talks with coup leaders, putting the country’s resources at risk.”
Most Ghanaians following the conversation questioned why a civilian leader like Mahama would choose to engage with military rulers, pointing to recent visits to Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso as evidence of questionable alliances. “What is John Mahama’s business with coup leaders? This is not mere diplomacy; there are deeper, possibly dangerous, motivations at play,” Afrifa-Mensah asked.
The media personality also drew attention to Mahama’s decision to appoint Gbevlo Lartey to manage diplomatic relations with the Sahel region, instead of typical ambassadors, adding further fuel to suspicions surrounding these engagements.
As the issue gains traction, Ghanaians are now calling for transparency and clarity on the government’s dealings with foreign powers and the potential impact on the nation’s precious resources.
Some are questioning whether these diplomatic maneuvers are in Ghana’s best interests or if there are hidden agendas related to the country’s wealth in gold.
