Ahead of the upcoming Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) national and regional elections scheduled for June 30, 2025, the GJA Elections Committee has taken significant steps to modernize the voting process and improve inclusivity for members.
In collaboration with the Electoral Commission’s Technical Advisor, the Committee engaged directly with contesting candidates to provide detailed explanations of new electoral reforms, including the introduction of proxy voting. This new measure aims to accommodate members who, for legitimate reasons, are unable to vote in person, thereby broadening participation while maintaining the integrity of the elections.
According to a press release from Mr. Peter Martey Agbeko, Chairperson of the Elections Committee, the proxy voting system incorporates eligibility verification and digital mechanisms to ensure secure and transparent operations. To date, 20 voters have been granted proxy status after thorough vetting, with four more pending confirmation.
Candidates were also briefed on the logistics for ballot paper printing and encouraged to appoint representatives to monitor the process, underscoring the Committee’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
The Committee called on all candidates and stakeholders to maintain high standards of conduct as the election day approaches, reinforcing the importance of ethical campaigning in preserving the credibility of the electoral process.
This proactive approach signals a new era of transparency and inclusiveness in the GJA electoral system, aligning it with international best practices and enhancing the democratic voice of journalists across Ghana.
