As the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) heads to the polls on Monday, June 30, 2025, incumbent president Albert Kwabena Dwumfour is positioning his re-election campaign on the strength of unfinished business and a renewed vision for media reform.
Seeking a second term, Dwumfour has unveiled a five-point plan that builds on his first-term achievements while introducing ambitious reforms to elevate the status, safety, and welfare of journalists nationwide. Central to his agenda is the drive to institutionalise better working conditions, bolster journalists’ welfare, and deepen press freedom protections.
According to Dwumfour, significant groundwork has been laid toward securing improved conditions of service for journalists. He is promising to finalise and implement these proposals if given another term, insisting that fair remuneration and decent work environments are non-negotiable.
Welfare is also a major plank of his re-election platform, with a commitment to roll out a comprehensive insurance package for GJA members and bolster support systems to respond swiftly to emergencies and member needs.
To enhance professionalism, Dwumfour is pledging to increase access to local and international scholarships aimed at upskilling journalists. He believes this is critical in helping practitioners meet modern standards in reporting and media ethics.
Another major promise involves regional restructuring of the GJA. Dwumfour plans to operationalise regional offices, revive inactive chapters, and ensure decentralised capacity-building opportunities that meet the specific needs of journalists across the country.
A consistent advocate of press freedom, Dwumfour says his second term will place greater emphasis on the safety of media workers. He reiterated that journalist protection will remain a top priority, reinforcing his administration’s mantra: “Still, journalists’ lives matter.”
With the GJA elections fast approaching, Dwumfour is presenting himself as a tested and visionary leader ready to complete the reforms he began — and chart new territory in advancing the cause of Ghanaian journalism.
