Former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame has pushed back against allegations of conflict of interest after taking up the legal defense of suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo in a high-stakes constitutional case currently before the Supreme Court.
Mr. Dame, who filed the suit on Wednesday, May 21, is challenging the legality of the impeachment process initiated against Justice Torkornoo. The suit specifically targets the work of a five-member committee tasked with investigating petitions for her removal, arguing that the process undermines judicial independence.
In an interview with Joy News, Mr. Dame defended his role, stating that his decision to represent the Chief Justice is rooted in principle and legality, not politics or personal gain.
“It is about time that good men in this country speak for what is righteous and what is right,” he stated, emphasizing his longstanding support for judicial integrity.
The Chief Justice is also seeking an injunction to stop the committee’s work and has raised objections to two of the justices—Gabriel Scott Pwamang and Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu—over concerns about impartiality.
The case has intensified scrutiny of the judiciary and sparked broader questions about the balance of power and legal ethics in Ghana’s governance system. The Supreme Court has yet to rule on the injunction request.
