Former Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame has strongly criticised what he describes as growing abuse of prosecutorial power in Ghana, following the controversial rearrest of former National Food Buffer Stock Company CEO Abdul-Wahab Hanan and his wife.
Speaking on Joy News, Mr Dame said the incident has raised serious questions about fairness, due process, and respect for individual rights in the country’s justice system.
His comments follow widespread public debate over the decision to rearrest Abdul-Wahab Hanan and his wife shortly after charges against them were reportedly withdrawn.
According to Mr Dame, some individuals are being publicly accused, humiliated, and subjected to reputational damage before investigators are able to establish credible evidence against them.
He argued that the handling of the case involving the former NAFCO boss reflects a worrying trend in the country’s criminal justice process.
“After damaging their reputation in the eyes of the public and suggesting they had committed wrongdoing, the state later withdraws the case and resorts to what appears to be harassment. That should not happen,” he said.
Mr Dame further called on state officials responsible for law enforcement to uphold justice and protect the constitutional rights of citizens.
He also accused both the Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General of actions he believes undermine fundamental legal protections.
The rearrest of Abdul-Wahab Hanan and his wife continues to generate public discussion over accountability, prosecutorial conduct, and the broader administration of justice in Ghana.
