Deputy Presidential Spokesperson, Shamima Muslim, has defended the ongoing investigations into former officials of the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, stating that the government is following due process in its pursuit of accountability.
Speaking on TV3’s New Day on Thursday, Shamima Muslim addressed concerns over reports of home raids and arrests, clarifying that the investigations involve persons of interest who may be invited for questioning.
“I’m yet to receive a full briefing on the matter, but what I can confirm is that investigations are ongoing. Some individuals are being engaged to assist with the process,” she stated.
She further explained that visiting the homes of individuals linked to the investigations is a legitimate method of gathering information.
“One way of obtaining relevant information is to visit the residences of these persons of interest. This is standard practice in any investigative process,” she noted.
The investigations have sparked criticism from the opposition, with allegations that the government is engaging in political persecution. However, Shamima Muslim dismissed these claims, arguing that the opposition is deliberately misrepresenting events for political gain.
“We must recognize that the opposition will always seek to oppose government actions, particularly when it involves auditing and accountability. Sometimes, they exaggerate or distort the reality to suit their agenda,” she said.
Describing the opposition’s stance as “misplaced propaganda and mischief,” she asserted that their reaction was part of a broader strategy to retain influence and create public discontent.
“This is their grand agenda—to resist any attempt to demand accountability from the previous government,” she stressed.
Despite the pushback, Shamima Muslim maintained that the government remains committed to due process and will not be swayed by political resistance as it works to ensure accountability.
