Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has reiterated that the government must repay GHS150.3 billion in domestic debt over the next four years—an obligation inherited from the Akufo-Addo administration under the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).
Speaking on The Point of View on Channel One TV, Dr. Forson detailed the debt repayment schedule, noting that 2027 and 2028 will be particularly challenging.
“In the next four years, we are required to pay GHS150.3 billion in domestic bonds. In 2027 alone, we must repay GHS57.6 billion, and in 2028, GHS52.5 billion,” he stated.
Beyond debt concerns, Dr. Forson highlighted the pressing financial difficulties in the energy sector, revealing that the government has earmarked GHS28 billion in the 2025 budget to keep the sector afloat.
“The energy sector is in crisis, generating an annual shortfall of over $2 billion that the state must cover. Without intervention, the sector would face severe disruptions by year-end,” he warned.
The Finance Minister’s remarks paint a picture of a government grappling with significant financial pressures, as it seeks to manage mounting debt repayments while stabilizing the energy sector.
