Transport company Caitec is under fire for failing to comply with a presidential directive to reverse its unauthorized reclamation of sections of the Weija Ramsar site, a protected wetland in Accra.
Despite President John Dramani Mahama’s clear instructions during a recent tour of flood-prone areas—ordering Caitec to undo the damage at its own expense—the company has yet to take any visible steps.
An inspection by the Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) revealed that the affected area remains untouched, prompting strong reactions from regional authorities.
Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, expressed frustration over the company’s inaction during a media briefing on Thursday, April 10.
“We were very clear with them—scoop the materials out and dredge the area. This is not optional. Yet we’ve come here and seen no progress,” she stated. “If they fail to act, we’ll return with our own equipment and get it done.”
She questioned whether elements within the assembly or other actors were shielding the company from facing consequences.
“This delay feels intentional. The company has the machines but is choosing not to comply. If they continue to defy us, we will enforce the law and take over the work,” she warned.
The directive is part of a broader government push to mitigate flooding in Accra ahead of the rainy season. Environmental experts have repeatedly warned that encroachments on the Ramsar site worsen the city’s flood risk.
