The High Court in Accra has brought forward the hearing of a motion filed by Ghanaian socialite Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, seeking to halt his extradition to the United States.
The development was disclosed by his lawyer, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, in a Facebook post on Monday, July 6, announcing that the court had directed both parties to appear on July 9 for the hearing.
“The High Court has just made an order bringing forward the date for hearing of motion to stay the extradition of Abu Trica. Both parties must appear on 9 July,” Barker-Vormawor wrote.
The application comes after the High Court recently ordered Kumi’s extradition to the United States, where he is wanted in connection with an alleged $8 million romance fraud scheme.
Barker-Vormawor had earlier criticised the pace of the proceedings, describing the extradition case as having been fast-tracked and indicating that the matter could ultimately be challenged before the Supreme Court.
“I am out of Ghana for work. I just heard that the case of Abu Trica has been fast tracked and a judge has just ordered his extradition. Hmmm. FBI 1 – Abu 1. I guess this issue goes to the Supreme Court,” he wrote in an earlier Facebook post.
Abu Trica has been in custody since December 2025 after being arrested in connection with an extradition request from the United States.
Although he was later granted bail in the sum of GH¢30 million with two justified sureties by the High Court after spending several months in detention, the extradition proceedings have continued.
United States authorities are seeking his extradition over allegations that he participated in a romance fraud scheme involving approximately $8 million.
The hearing scheduled for July 9 is expected to determine whether the extradition order will be temporarily suspended while the legal challenge proceeds.
