The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill has been reintroduced in Parliament for consideration, following its initial passage by the 8th Parliament but lack of presidential assent under former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration.
Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, Member of Parliament for Assin South, confirmed the development in an interview with Citi News on Thursday, February 27, 2025. He noted that key proponents of the bill, including MPs Sam George, Emmanuel Bedzrah, Alhassan Tampuli, Abdul Kabiru, and Ekow Vincent, have spearheaded efforts to bring it back to the legislative house for approval.
According to Ntim Fordjour, the bill, which seeks to criminalize LGBT activities, advocacy, and funding in Ghana, has already been accepted by Parliament, and necessary procedures are being set in motion for its swift passage.
“But it is the same bill, so it is not expected to delay at all. The chiefs, our imams, our clergymen, and the coalition who supported us are still standing firmly behind us,” he stated.
He further called on President John Dramani Mahama to assent to the bill once Parliament passes it, emphasizing that Speaker of Parliament and various religious and traditional leaders remain committed to seeing the legislation enacted.
