The people of Akwatia and beyond have gathered at the Akyem Wenchi Durbar Grounds to mark the 40-day observance of the late Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi, whose passing has left a void in both the constituency and national politics.
The solemn ceremony drew hundreds of mourners, including traditional leaders, religious groups, and community members who came to celebrate the life of a man many described as selfless and committed to his people.
While leading figures of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) were present in large numbers, attendees emphasized that the occasion was first and foremost a moment of reflection on the MP’s contributions and the challenges he endured in his short time in office.
NPP General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, speaking at the sidelines, described the late Kumi as a resilient leader who stood tall despite political pressures. “Considering how he worked hard and the difficulties he went through, even after he won the election, his passing is a devastating blow to the party and the people of Akwatia,” he said.
Mourners also highlighted Kumi’s dedication to improving education and youth development in the constituency, recalling his efforts to bring resources to deprived communities.
As Akwatia prepares for a by-election on Tuesday, September 2, many residents say they hope the poll will serve not only as a political exercise but also as an opportunity to honour the memory of a man who fought for their constituency until his untimely death.
