Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has distanced himself from the arrest and prosecution of an organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Agona West, insisting that he neither lodged a complaint nor authorised legal action against the individual.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, Dr. Bawumia called on the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney-General to immediately discontinue the case and any similar prosecutions purportedly undertaken in his name.
The statement follows the arrest and arraignment of the NDC organiser, who is facing prosecution for allegedly publishing false news and making offensive comments about the former Vice President.
“The attention of the Office of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been drawn to the arrest and arraignment of an organiser of the National Democratic Congress in Agona West,” the statement said.
Dr. Bawumia stressed that he had no involvement in the matter and had never endorsed the arrest or prosecution of any Ghanaian for comments made against him.
“He has neither lodged any complaint nor sanctioned any prosecution against this young man or any other citizen. He does not desire, and will not endorse, the arrest or prosecution of any Ghanaian in his name for speech,” the statement noted.
Reflecting on his years in public office, Dr. Bawumia said he has been subjected to insults and falsehoods throughout his political career but has consistently refrained from using the power of the state to respond.
Instead, he maintained that the appropriate response to offensive speech is dialogue and truth rather than criminal prosecution.
According to him, “the answer to offensive speech is better speech, and the answer to falsehood is truth, not handcuffs, courtrooms, and crushing bail conditions imposed on ordinary Ghanaians.”
The NPP flagbearer therefore appealed to the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney-General to withdraw the prosecution and release the accused person to return to his family and livelihood.
Dr. Bawumia further argued that Ghana’s democracy is strengthened when citizens, including political opponents, are able to express themselves freely without fear of intimidation or prosecution.
He disclosed that he had forgiven the young man involved in the case and wished him well, while urging political actors to channel their energies into addressing issues that affect the lives of Ghanaians rather than engaging in personal attacks.
The statement was signed by the Communications Directorate of the Office of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
