John Evans Kumordzi has been officially confirmed as the new Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Akuapem North Municipal Assembly, following a transparent and closely monitored voting exercise. The process was overseen by officials from the Electoral Commission and supervised by the Eastern Regional Minister, Mrs. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey.
Kumordzi, a former Corporal in the Ghana Police Service, resigned from the force to pursue a political career aimed at serving his community and country. Although he was unsuccessful in his bid to represent Akuapem North as a parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress in the 2024 general elections, his political journey has now reached a significant milestone with this appointment.
The assembly, comprising 48 members — including 32 elected representatives and 16 government appointees — held a vote in which Kumordzi secured 32 votes, surpassing the two-thirds majority threshold required by Ghana’s Constitution and Local Governance Act. The Eastern Regional Minister officiated the swearing-in of the 16 government appointees before the vote, ensuring full legitimacy in the selection process.
In his acceptance remarks, Mr. Kumordzi expressed gratitude for the confidence shown in him and emphasized his commitment to collaborative governance. He pledged to work closely with assembly members and stakeholders to advance key municipal priorities, especially tackling sanitation challenges and youth unemployment.
This appointment signals a new phase of leadership in Akuapem North, with expectations high for developmental progress under Kumordzi’s stewardship.
