Mr Joseph Kojo Ofori, Assemblyman for the Sealight Electoral Area in Tema Manhean, has been unanimously elected as the new Presiding Member (PM) of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), securing a 100 per cent ‘yes’ vote from members.
His election followed the withdrawal of his contender, Mr Lasisi Baba Tunde, Assemblyman for the Horticulture Electoral Area, shortly after nominations were completed.
In his acceptance remarks, Mr Ofori expressed gratitude to the assembly members for the confidence they had placed in him and pledged to collaborate closely with them to advance development across the Tema metropolis.
Before the election, the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, Ms Ebi Bright, commended the outgoing Presiding Member, Mr Felix Fauchie Sobreh, for fostering a calm and cooperative atmosphere within the assembly.
She noted that contrary to expectations of tension and divisions, Mr Sobreh led the assembly with unity, inclusiveness, and purpose.
“I have enjoyed a surprisingly wonderful cordiality from the outgoing PM,” she said, praising his ability to maintain harmony among members with diverse personalities.
Ms Bright highlighted several achievements during his tenure, including increases in the Consolidated Fund, the Assembly Members Development Fund, and improved wages and benefits for internally generated fund (IGF) staff. She also credited him with strengthening relations between assembly staff and members.
The MCE urged the new Presiding Member to build on the strong foundation laid by his predecessor, describing the achievements as the “barest minimum” expected going forward.
The election of a Presiding Member is guided by provisions in the Local Government Act and the Model Standing Orders.
The Tema Metropolitan Assembly comprises 34 members, including the Metropolitan Chief Executive, 21 elected assembly members, 10 government appointees, and two Members of Parliament who serve without voting rights.
