The newly appointed Chairman of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) Council, Justice William Atuguba, has pledged to champion academic freedom and drive improvements in educational standards as he takes on the leadership role.
Speaking at his first meeting with departmental heads of the university on Tuesday, May 13, the retired Supreme Court judge acknowledged the challenges ahead but stressed the importance of collective effort in advancing the institution’s mission.
“I am fully aware that this position is not one of comfort, as it comes with its own set of entrenched issues. However, I urge all of you to work together for the betterment of this institution,” Justice Atuguba said.
He highlighted the critical need for restoring high academic standards and protecting the rights of faculty and students to freely pursue knowledge without undue interference.
“We must fight for the enhancement of academic freedom and the reinstatement of standards in this university,” he added, urging unity and commitment from the university’s leadership.
Justice Atuguba’s appointment has been widely welcomed, given his distinguished legal career and reputation for integrity. Many in the academic community see his leadership as an opportunity to strengthen UCC’s academic standing and reinforce its commitment to intellectual independence.
