Former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, has withdrawn from the New Patriotic Party’s ongoing “Thank You” tour, citing serious security concerns following a violent altercation in Kumasi that left one of his supporters hospitalized.
The incident, which occurred during an NPP event at the Pentecost Church in Bantama, involved members of Unity Hall’s Jama group from KNUST, who had been invited by Agyapong’s team to perform. Tensions flared when a group of alleged NPP-affiliated armed men confronted the Jama performers and seized money reportedly gifted to them by a close associate of Agyapong.
What began as a verbal exchange quickly turned violent, with gunshots reportedly fired. One Jama group member was stabbed in the melee and was immediately rushed to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he is receiving emergency care.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Agyapong confirmed his team’s withdrawal from the tour, emphasizing his inability to guarantee their safety under such conditions.
“I am pulling out of the ‘Thank You’ tour because lives are at risk. I don’t think I can protect my team anymore. Dr Bawumia can go on with his campaign,” Agyapong stated.
His team has since filed a formal complaint with the Kumasi Central Police Command as investigations into the incident continue. The development casts a shadow over internal party events, raising fresh concerns about safety and unity ahead of the 2024 elections.
