The Keta Divisional Police Command has deepened its fight against illicit drug activities after destroying 24 maxim bags of suspected cannabis, valued at an estimated GH₵360,000, in a public exercise held at Adzido.
The destruction follows the interception of the massive consignment on December 29, 2023, at Adzido beach, where unknown individuals had abandoned the illicit cargo. Despite extensive investigations, no arrests have been made.
Chief Superintendent Maxwell Agyemang, the Keta Divisional Police Commander, revealed in an interview with the Ghana News Agency that each bag contained about 30 wrapped pieces of cannabis, with each wrap estimated at GH₵500.
“We acted swiftly on a tipoff and managed to intercept the bags, but the culprits remain unidentified. Nevertheless, our commitment to fighting drug trafficking and abuse in the municipality remains firm,” Superintendent Agyemang stated.
The event, witnessed by officials from the Narcotic Control Commission, including Madam Elaina Annor-Agyapong, served as a warning to drug peddlers and users across the municipality.
According to Superintendent Agyemang, this is not an isolated case. On September 27, 2024, a similar operation led to the seizure of 78 maxim bags of marijuana at the same Adzido beach location.
Beyond seizures, the Keta Divisional Command is partnering with the Keta Municipal Assembly to roll out a public education campaign aimed at curbing drug abuse among the youth. Worrying trends show that substances such as tramadol, tamaking, and cannabis are increasingly being abused by senior and junior high school students.
Madam Annor-Agyapong cautioned the youth against the dangers of illicit drug use, highlighting consequences such as mental health issues, imprisonment, and death.
The police have called on community members to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to aid the ongoing crackdown on illegal drugs.
