Avoeme’s flood-prone football field is set for a dramatic transformation into a multi-sport complex, in what residents describe as a long-awaited breakthrough for youth development in the Ketu South Municipality.
The project, fully funded by the Felix Akonta Akakpo Foundation, follows a community engagement with residents ahead of the rehabilitation of the Avoeme–Aflao pitch. Completion is expected within six months.
From Flooded Field to Modern Facility
The redevelopment will begin with extensive land reclamation to address perennial flooding that has rendered the field unusable during heavy rains. Engineers estimate that at least 800 truckloads of sand will be required to elevate the site to the level of the Aflao–Accra main road.
Upon completion, the complex will feature a standard football park alongside volleyball, basketball and handball courts. Supporting infrastructure will include dressing rooms, toilet facilities, a borehole water system, perimeter fencing and an access road connecting communities across the lagoon.
Plans also include the establishment of a new school to complement Avoeme Basic School, positioning the site as both a sports and educational hub.
Community-Driven Development
Speaking at the engagement, Mr Felix Akonta Akakpo — recently installed by the Aflao Traditional Council as Torgbui Tenuvi II — said the initiative was rooted in a commitment to long-term development for the municipality.
“My fidelity is to the people of Ketu South, both born and unborn generations. The future is now and we must deliver the needed development to our people without any preconditions,” he stated, urging residents to support the project’s timely completion.
Youth representative Mr Alex Vandapoure said the absence of a standard pitch had cost many talented players opportunities to advance their football careers. He described the initiative as the fulfilment of promises that had gone unaddressed for years.
Rev Charles Dorkenu, Public Relations Officer of the Ketu South Education Directorate, called the facility a potential game changer for school sports, noting that students often travel long distances under risky conditions to compete due to the lack of adequate infrastructure.
With construction already underway, chiefs and residents have expressed optimism that the sports complex will not only nurture athletic talent but also strengthen social cohesion and educational development across Avoeme and the wider municipality.
